Historically the chateau was established in 1749, under the ownership of Irishman, Thomas Lynch. In the 1855 Bordeaux Wine Classification it was designated a fifth (5me) growth. The 90Ha of vines are located on a gravel ridge of well drained soils overlooking the Gironde estuary near the town of Pauillac. Soils are composed of deep gravel over limestone.
